The River of Doubt

Our former president Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit were entitled a great opportunity in December of 1913. He and 50 other man embarked on a mission to explore and map the Rio da Duvida, The River of Doubt. The river was some uncharted land in Brazil, South America that the minister of foreign affairs said was worth exploring. Theodore Roosevelt, his son Kermit, and 50 other men teamed up with the most well known Brazilian explorer Candido Randon. Prior to the expedition, Roosevelt switched his political party. Many people looked down on Roosevelt’s decision, while others stayed loyal to him. The group started their expedition in Buenos Aires, Argentina and went all the way down the river, mapping almost the entire 1,000 miles. Many people did not believe that such a feat could even be possible, but the great triumph came with a great cost. When the trip was over, Roosevelt, his son Kermit, and 3 other men were the only ones who survived. Many were killed by the ferocious rapids, Indian attacks, disease, starvation and a murderer in their own group. Lastly, the greatest loss of them all: Theodore Roosevelt developed a severe case of malaria, a disease that would kill him in a short time. Before Roosevelt died, the River was named after him: The Rio Roosevelt. In his lifetime, Roosevelt became president, lost an election, and explored much of the unknown Amazon’s in South America. He will forever be known as a great, American hero and adventurist.
